Which is better, public
college or private college? Often many high school graduates face a dilemma to
choose the best college for them. Not infrequently who believe that PTN would
be better than the PTS. This can not be denied because in fact many private
universities are only a reserve where they continue the world of education. But
is that always the case?
The public view that PTN
is better than PTS is not entirely true. Many things become aspects of the
quality assessment of universities in Indonesia. Aspects are like alumni,
vision-mission of the university, accreditation status, curriculum, lecturer or
human resources quality, management and organization, quality of student
activities, as well as quality research and scientific publications.
What is the purpose of students to continue their
education in college?
The first objective of a
student after graduating from university is to have easy access to appropriate
work. Easy
to get a job is not always seen from the level of popularity of the university
of origin graduate. Such
popularity must be proved by the ability of its graduates. Many
university graduates do not get jobs due to several things. One
reason is the issue of quality and competence of new graduates. The
low soft skills possessed by the new graduates become the consideration of
whether or not graduates are accepted. The
new graduates, should have the ability in leadership, communication skills,
honesty and integrity (responsibility). The
quality of human resources is common in Indonesia. So
we can conclude that as good as any college we choose will not always reflect
the level of academic and non-academic capacity of both the graduates.
Why do people tend to choose PTN?
The reason why they
chose PTN because they put the hope that the opportunity to get a job in the
future is greater than the PTS. Though many companies prefer private university
graduates who excel in terms of capability and competence compared to state
university graduates. In addition, they consider that state university
graduates are more prestigious and will be viewed better than private.
Many of them are eager
to enter the PTN so they are looking for majors with low competition levels and
selecting them in the hope of greater acceptability. They just want to enter
and registered as a student of PTN, but not aware if the interests and
abilities are not in accordance with the chosen majors. However, the act of
selecting majors in order to be able to study at the PTN will hurt yourself and
the chosen majors. There are two possibilities that will happen that is the
students will survive college to finish or even they then ask to move to other
majors. In addition they may not live up to their chosen majors so as to
influence their achievements or may even affect the field of work to which they
will be selected.
Another reason is the
cost of PTN is relatively cheaper. Tuition
fees in private universities that are difficult to reach make people in droves
to prefer PTN rather than PTS. This
is certainly a big consideration because many young Indonesians who are not
able to mengenyam world lectures. This
inhibiting factor is due to the imbalance between limited family income and the
higher cost of higher education. The
high cost is actually allocated to continuously improve the quality of
universities in Indonesia amidst increasingly tight competition. But
not only in the PTN, PTS also provides scholarships for new students and other
scholarships for the achievers to facilitate every child get education. The
low cost of education at PTN will certainly affect the provision of campus
facilities for students. In
fact, not infrequently PTN students who moved to PTS with the reasons PTS
presents facilities to support the learning process better.
Is the accreditation of all state universities
better than private universities?
Accreditation from each
college becomes the main attraction for new students. Accreditation
becomes one of the college's reference to further improve the quality of the
college and the quality of its graduates. Accreditation
also ensures that universities have met the applicable quality standards. Not
all accredited state universities are superior to private universities, it can
be seen from what study program is chosen in the college. Not
necessarily a certain department in PTN A better than PTS B. The assessment can
be seen from the accreditation of the college. Some
of the private universities have applied for accreditation, but others have
not. Whereas
the status of accreditation is very important to guarantee the right of
graduates to get a job. Newly
graduated students need to prioritize PTS status, if they want to study at PTS.
Not
all universities are accredited, while most state universities have obtained
the status.
Each college, both
public and private, has its own advantages and disadvantages. Many graduates of
state universities in Indonesia outperform private universities in certain
fields. Even some favorite PTNs are ranked higher. However, many private
universities in Indonesia are quite calculated in Asia or the world. Graduates
of the PTS are also many who booked in advance by reputable companies before
they graduate. The quality of graduates certainly not only belongs to PTN. Not
a few graduates of PTN who hold the title of intellectual unemployment.
Graduates of PTN or PTS are not a problem as long as individual qualities can
be taken into account in the world labor market. So if our main goal in the
world of lectures is to get the right job, be it a public or private university
does not fully help us in our career, but we must first prepare our hard skills
and soft skills.
