Since I was born I have
been introduced a lot about Batak culture by my parents. But I think batak culture is very difficult to
understand because I have not known and love my culture.I exposed to the modern life and enjoyed to be a
modern people. I ignore everything related to my tribe and my culture. The
reason is because I thought Bataknese culture is so complicated, old-fashioned
and boring.
As time pass by and the time is almost come for me to
hold my own event then I can't do anything except learning about my tribes and
culture. In my opinion, it is too late to learn about it now but the proverbs
that said 'better late than never' is right. I maybe late to learn about my own
culture and feel so sorry about it.
Now I realize that I have a great and excellent
culture and I need to preserve it. What are they:
1. The language Bataknese language is unique, it is
needed to comunicate among Bataknese. It shows brotherhood and friendliness for
the people who use it.
2. Ulos The
cloth the we use as a symbol of our culture. Whenever people see us wearing
ulos, then anybody will know that we are Bataknese. Ulos is used both for men
and women. It has many types and patterns. Men and women use a different kind
of pattern according to their role.
3. The procession of Wedding Ceremony The procession
of wedding ceremony that we called Upacara Adat takes 5-6 hours of the day. It
has many stages that I can't explain well, but the purpose of the ceremony is
to accept the newly wed couple as part of the family. The bride and the
bridegroom will get all the blessings, appreciation, love and affection from
the whole family. Whole family means from the great grandfather of both family
that goes down to his tribes.
4. The unique addressee Bataknese is very famous in
addressing her/his relatives such as oppung doli (grandpa), opung boru
(grandma), tulang (brother of our mother), nantulang (wife of tulang), namboru
(sister of our father), amangboru (husband of our namboru), bapatua (older
brother of our father), inangtua (wife of bapatua), bapauda (younger brother of
our father), inanguda (wife of bapauda), eda (sister in law), lae (brother in
law)
My knowledge about my culture is still shallow but I
thank God that I have my culture that I can proud of. So friends, be proud of
your own culture cause it shows where you belong. For me, I belong to
Bataknese.
